Eye Area

Why do under-eye bags and dark circles develop?

Under-eye bags and dark circles are one of the most common concerns when it comes to the face. They can make you look tired or older, even when you sleep well and your skin is otherwise in good condition. The cause is rarely straightforward: usually multiple factors play a role simultaneously.

Common causes

  • Volume loss: As we age, the fat tissue and bone volume around the eye socket diminish. This makes the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek more visible, creating a hollow or sunken appearance.
  • Thin skin: The skin around the eyes is naturally thinner than elsewhere on the face. As skin quality declines, underlying blood vessels become more visible, causing a dark or purplish tint.
  • Pigmentation: Some skin types have extra pigment production around the eyes. This is often genetically determined and more common in darker skin tones.
  • Fluid retention: Fluid build-up under the eyes can lead to a swollen or puffy appearance, especially in the morning. This can be aggravated by salt intake, lack of sleep or allergic reactions.
  • Genetics: The predisposition for under-eye bags or dark circles is largely hereditary. Some people naturally have a deeper tear trough or less supporting tissue in the eye area.

Treatment options at Noveve Aesthetics

Depending on the cause and severity of the under-eye bags, various treatments are possible. Below we discuss the options we offer at Noveve.

1. Tear trough filler (hyaluronic acid)

For volume loss in the tear trough, a hyaluronic acid-based filler can fill the hollow space. The result is immediately visible: the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek becomes softer, reducing the shadow that causes the under-eye bag. The effect lasts an average of 9 to 12 months.

The tear trough is one of the most delicate zones to treat. It requires an experienced physician who works precisely with small amounts of product. At Noveve, we use a specific, lightweight filler suitable for this thin skin zone.

2. Ami Eyes (polynucleotides)

Ami Eyes is a polynucleotide-based treatment that improves skin quality around the eyes from within. Rather than adding volume, it stimulates collagen production and improves the elasticity and hydration of the skin. The result gradually builds over several weeks and lasts an average of 6 to 9 months.

This treatment is particularly suitable for dark circles caused by thin skin or reduced skin quality, and can also be used preventively to maintain the skin around the eyes in good condition.

3. Profhilo for skin quality

Profhilo is a bio-remodelling treatment that deeply hydrates the skin and stimulates collagen and elastin production. Although Profhilo was not specifically developed for the eye area, it can contribute to an overall improvement of skin quality in the face. Firmer, better-hydrated skin can indirectly improve the appearance of the eye area.

4. AlumierMD eye care

Good daily skincare can make a noticeable difference for mild under-eye bags and dark circles. AlumierMD offers targeted eye products that strengthen and protect the skin around the eyes. AluminEye contains peptides and antioxidants that make the skin firmer and brighter, while the Retinol Eye Gel stimulates cell renewal and reduces fine lines.

Skincare cannot replace an injectable treatment, but it is a valuable complement or a good starting point if you prefer a non-invasive approach.

When to choose which treatment?

Tear trough filler

For volume loss

Ideal if you suffer from a hollow tear trough or a visible shadow under the eyes. Provides immediate results through volume restoration. Suitable for clear volume loss in the eye area.

Ami Eyes

For skin quality

Ideal if the skin around the eyes is thin, dry or darkly discoloured. Improves skin quality from within through collagen stimulation. Suitable for dark circles caused by thin skin or as a preventive treatment.

In some cases, a combination of treatments can provide the most effective result. For example, a tear trough filler can restore volume while Ami Eyes improves skin quality. Which approach suits you best depends on the specific cause of your under-eye bags and your personal wishes. During a consultation at Noveve, we carefully assess the eye area and advise which treatment or combination is most suitable.
