Your smile is very personal and defining for your face. A gummy smile is also known as a gum smile, because the gum is excessively visible. This is caused by overactivity of the muscles that pull the upper lip upward. Through Botox, a gummy smile can be subtly corrected. The botox will cause the upper lip to be pulled up less, resulting in less visible gum when smiling.
Having a gummy smile can lead to discomfort and embarrassment and a reduced sense of self-confidence. Some people even avoid smiling altogether or hold their hand in front of their mouth. If you are bothered by the amount of gum visible when you smile, this treatment can provide a solution.
The treatment
Prior to the treatment, a comprehensive consultation takes place in which we discuss your wishes, expectations and risks of the treatment. The physician places 2 injections at specific points in the muscles next to the nostrils. This will cause the muscles that pull the upper lip upward to relax.
Within 3 to 5 days the first effect becomes visible, and after approximately 2 weeks the full result can be seen. The results last for approximately 3 to 4 months; this varies per person. Regular repeat treatments are recommended to maintain the effect.
Safety
Botox treatments are generally very safe but may have some side effects such as bruising, swelling or redness. Rare complications include facial asymmetry, infection and a crooked smile. In very rare cases, botox may spread to other parts of the face or an allergic reaction may occur.
Before a botox treatment, it is important to avoid blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, for several days to minimise bruising. Always consult a physician before stopping such medication. After the treatment, we recommend not touching the treated area and not lying flat for the first 4 to 6 hours. This prevents the botox from migrating to surrounding muscles. It is also advised to avoid physical exertion for the first 24 hours, as well as sunbeds and saunas. Always follow the specific instructions from the physician for optimal results and recovery.

Yes, you can still smile normally. The botox only reduces the excessive movement of the upper lip, so less gum is visible. Your smile will look natural.
This depends on the individual situation. On average, the visible gum is reduced by 2-4 millimetres. During the consultation, we will discuss what is achievable in your case.
The effect lasts an average of 3 to 4 months, after which the treatment can be repeated. The exact duration varies per person.
