Sweating is an important, natural process for the body. It allows the body to cool down when needed and maintain the correct body temperature. However, the degree of sweat production varies from person to person. Injections with small amounts of Botox can provide relief at the site of excessive sweating to reduce it. The Botox ensures that the nerve endings that control the sweat glands are temporarily blocked, so they will no longer produce sweat. Only the sweat glands in the treated area will temporarily stop working; all other sweat glands will continue to function normally.
Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition in which someone sweats more than usual. This can occur in various areas such as the armpits, palms, soles of the feet or in the face. This condition can be both physically and mentally very distressing and can lead to embarrassment and/or a reduced quality of life.
When you still perspire excessively despite good hygiene and the use of products such as deodorant, a botox treatment can offer a solution.
The treatment
Prior to the treatment, an extensive consultation takes place in which we discuss your wishes, expectations and the risks of the treatment. Numbing cream is then applied before the treatment to reduce any discomfort. The treatment consists of 20-30 superficial injections in which the Botox is administered. The total treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. The required dosage depends on the degree of sweating and the treatment area.
Within a few days after treatment, the first effect is noticeable, and after approximately 2 weeks the Botox has fully taken effect. In many cases, sweating will significantly decrease or even disappear completely in the treated areas. Should the dosage prove insufficient after 2 weeks, we offer a follow-up treatment at a small additional cost. The results of this treatment last for approximately 4 to 6 months; this varies per person. After this period, the nerve supply to the sweat glands will resume and sweat production will increase again. Regular repeat treatments are recommended to maintain the effect.
Safety
Botox treatments are generally very safe but may have some side effects such as bruising, swelling or redness. Rare complications include, for example, infections. In very rare cases, botox may spread to other parts of the face or an allergic reaction may occur.
Before a botox treatment, it is important to avoid blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, for several days to minimise bruising. Always consult a physician before stopping such medication. Additionally, for an armpit treatment it is important that the armpits are cleanly shaved. After the treatment, we recommend not touching the treated area and not lying flat for the first 4 to 6 hours. This prevents the botox from migrating to surrounding muscles. It is also advised to avoid physical exertion for the first 24 hours, as well as sunbeds and saunas. Always follow the specific instructions from the physician for optimal results and recovery.

In most cases, no. The remaining sweat glands in the body continue to function normally. Compensatory sweating in other areas is rare.
