Collagen stimulation
Sculptra is a bio-stimulating treatment that uses poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a substance that stimulates the natural production of collagen in the skin. The treatment is designed to restore volume loss, counteract skin laxity and make the skin firmer and fuller. Sculptra is often used for subtle, natural rejuvenation and is primarily applied in areas such as the face, cheeks, jawline and neck. The result is a youthful appearance without the need for surgical procedures. PLLA is also used to reduce deeper wrinkles and volume loss.
The Sculptra treatment is ideal for people who want to address signs of ageing, such as sagging, loss of volume or deep wrinkles. This treatment is suitable for both younger people who want to prevent skin laxity, and older people who want to reduce the visible effects of ageing. It is particularly effective if you want to achieve a natural, subtle improvement of facial contours and skin structure, without the use of fillers or Botox.
The treatment
Prior to the treatment, a comprehensive consultation takes place in which we discuss your wishes, expectations and the risks of the treatment. Based on this conversation, a personalised treatment plan is drawn up. During the treatment, the product is distributed through the skin via a cannula, where the PLLA stimulates the production of collagen. After the treatment, the skin may feel somewhat swollen or sensitive, but most people can return to their daily activities immediately. It is customary to undergo the treatment in a series of 2 sessions, with a period of 8-12 weeks between sessions, to achieve the maximum result. The treatment itself takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
The results of a Sculptra treatment are not immediately visible, as collagen production needs time to get started. After approximately 4-6 weeks, the first improvements become visible, and the full result is often visible after 3-6 months. The skin gradually becomes fuller, firmer and the contours are subtly improved. The effects typically last 18-24 months, as the collagen production in the skin is stimulated on a long-term basis.
Safety
Sculptra is a safe treatment with minimal side effects when performed by a qualified and experienced physician. Possible side effects include temporary swelling, redness or small bruises at the injection sites, but these usually disappear within a few hours to days. In rare cases, the product may accumulate and cause nodules (small lumps). This can be resolved effectively in most cases. In some cases, infections or allergic reactions may occur, but this is extremely uncommon.
Before a Sculptra treatment, it is important to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin for a few days beforehand to minimise bruising. Always consult a physician before stopping such medication. After the treatment, the skin may feel somewhat sensitive. With this treatment, we recommend massaging the treated area thoroughly 5 times per day, for 5 minutes, for 5 days. This is important to prevent nodules (small lumps) and to distribute the product evenly in the skin. It is also advisable to avoid physical exertion for the first 24 hours, as well as sunbeds and saunas. Always follow the specific instructions from the physician for optimal results and recovery.
